Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with WILBERT HARRISON!

Repping for the Kansas City Chiefs, this classic by Mr. Wilbert Harrison, 'Kansas City.'

When the evil Art Modell took the Browns to Mordor and Johnny suddenly had no NFL team to cheer for he did briefly consider changing his allegiances to the Chiefs. They were an established team, played on natural grass and had great fans. Johnny did hang on for the Browns to come back years later but for a while there, the Chiefs looked like they could be the new team of record.

While Johnny will be pulling for the 49ers on Sunday, it's nothing against the Chiefs or their great fanbase.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with JESSE FULLER!

Repping our San Francisco side of things, the standard by Jesse Fuller, 'San Francisco Bay Blues.'

Mea Culpa, Johnny will be cheering for the 49ers on Sunday. Mrs Johnny was a huge SF fan and Johnny has many throwback jerseys from which to choose from to wear Sunday. He's down to a Ronnie Lott or Jerry Rice. Johnny finds himself cheering for SF because his team is the Browns and they weren't often in the playoffs while the Niners were perennials for so long.

Here's to the San Francisco fans!

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with SANTO & JOHNNY!

Do you know how long Johnny has been waiting to see his name up in the big lights of the Music Series?

Even if it's the wrong Johnny.

Santo and Johnny taking us out tonight with their classic, 'Sleepwalk'

Johnny has caught wind of dissension in the Perchville ranks -- Tawas Bay Beach Resort has gone all Footloose

If Johnny is hearing the Perchville fans are upset about the new rules we've heard being laid out by the Tawas Bay Beach Resort all the way up in Oscoda, friends, Perchville has a problem. The entire launching pad for Perchville events Johnny hears has gone all John Lithgow in Footloose: No doors left open. Trying to crack down on people going and out of other rooms with ease, rules, stipulations and Johnny's heard from three people they're not happy. Really cracking down on the fun folks have come to expect, that's no good.

Know who has fine-ass hotels and motels and love when you have a good time? Don't make Johnny say it. Why not c'mon up and stay in a place that knows a little something about fishing.

And fun.

Some thoughts on the rising worry of the Wuhan Flu/Corona Virus

Johnny has been following, closer probably than the average American, the troubling outbreak from Wuhan Province in China of the Corona Virus that has now spread throughout China and has popped up around the globe. Many of you who regularly read this website as well as the old Jersey City Desk know, Johnny's wife passed away from Avian Flu A or commonly known as 'bird flu.' Johnny has spent a lot of time learning about the Zoonotic diseases (diseases that pass from animals to humans) and he can tell you one thing, prevention is the only way to deal with something possibly deadly like this Corona virus.

Mrs. Johnny passed away in her sleep early in the morning on a Monday. She'd gone to her personal trainer at Base in Jersey City on Sunday. That evening was also the Patriots vs Eagles Super Bowl and she ate like one would at a Super Bowl party. By morning she was gone. Never felt the need to take more than a usual dose of Delsym cough syrup.

What can we learn? There is NO wellness program at work or flu shot at Walgreens that is going to protect you from these strange strains of flu. By the time you have your blood work sent off and it comes back, the flu has already mostly run it's course. By the time you have it kids, it's too late, you have it, right? Sadly, about the only real thing one can do is to follow suggestions about not getting these diseases, like washing hands constantly after going out and doing anything. Don't touch your mouth, nose or eyes before washing your hands.

Where did Mrs. Johnny even get the Bird Flu? Who knows but therein lies his point, you never know who you're walking by at the Target or riding next to on a train. PREVENTION is your best and really only way to game plan an outbreak like this.

Oh, btw, if you're going to get a medical mask to wear, the common cheap-o's don't stop what you want it to stop, spring for a better kind.

Everybody likes to trace things back to the original thing. Who was the first one to do something. Here's a great story on the first twerkers and how it's nobody you'll ever imagine until you click here.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with THE ANIMALS!

The Animals here on 'Don't Bring Me Down' simply explaining "his" earning potential goes up when "her" yelling and nonsense goes down. Seems almost like a relationship law of physics for snivelers. Eric Burdon is lucky this is such a great song otherwise. More of that ratty/greasy/electric slinky guitar in the background, please.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with PETE YORN!

Now here's one of those great rockers that sounds good at any time of day, morning, noon, or Music Series song picking time, 'Life on a Chain'

This song also provides all your daily necessary requirements for vitamins and minerals for your earholes. So important.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with STEVIE WONDER!

It's always nice when the Music Series "Wheel-O-Artists" lands on someone like Stevie Wonder who has such an incredible libarry to pull a song from. We'll take it out tonight to the amazing 'You Haven't Done Nothin'' because it'll be in your head until next Friday night.

This song was such a powerful anti-Nixon song you know what? Nixon resigned two days after it was released. Like CBS newsman Walter Cronkite said at the time, "When you've lost Stevie, you've lost America."

Happy MLK Day!

Long a proponent of Dr. King's ideas, Johnny is proud to post, as he does every MLK Day, Dr. King's 'I Have A Dream' speech from the National Mall.

Enjoy!

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with PATTI LABELLE!

This song is so far ahead of it's time. For instance, take these lyrics to 'Lady Marmalade':

Voulez-vous coucher avec moi, ce soir?
Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?

"The Houston Astros are dirty rotten cheaters." Wow. It's like Ms. Patti LaBelle could see the future. So good.

Know what else is good? This song.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with SIMPLE MINDS!

'Alive and Kicking' is truly one Simple Minds songs Johnny can just kick back and enjoy. You see, Mrs. Johnny was a huge Simple Minds fan so Johnny heard them in the 80's a LOT.

No, a LOT.

So many songs now can drone a bit but this one Johnny always held in good stead. Batting second tonight, the aforementioned 'Alive and Kicking'

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with LOVE!

Love, you know, Love. If you don't know the band why you certainly know the music. Perhaps no song was ever recorded so passionately. Perhaps no song set the table for a guy with a high-powered rifle on top of the local university bell tower as well as this one.

Love and 'My Little Red Book' taking us out and dropping that worm in your earholes.

National Weather Service says 6-9" so we'll just go with that for Saturday.

Time for Oscoda, After Dark

Did you like last Saturday's snow?

If you did Johnny has some GREAT news for you, we're getting more this Saturday, potentially much more. The Oscoda City Desk Action Weather Team is constantly checking maps and fronts and humidomometers and other sources and so forth and right now, one source says around 5" of snow Saturday while Accuweather, normally not one to put up big projections too soon just threw up and 8-12" for the Oscoda City Desk viewing area.

Again, Johnny will have more on this storm as more becomes available.

Winter blues got ya down, Bunky?

The Oscoda Press has a handy list of things you can participate in to break winter's hold and get folks outside (so they can go back inside) and have some fun, do some reading, knitting, activities or become a beat poet, there's really something for everyone.

While snow totals have dropped into the 5-8" range the question will be how much ice Oscoda gets all up in our trees and on the power lines. The ice should get in here around 6am. Current models show the ice band between the snow and rain will move north to south along with the snow. The rest we'll have to wait and see.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA!

This song would sound great kicking off just about anything. So classic. Seriously, you could use this song to start a party or get people going at a sporting event and it would get folks up and at 'em. Johnny wouldn't mind if the organist started his funeral with it. 'Do Ya' is maybe our way of kicking off the snowstorm that appears headed our way. Music to have a blizzard by.

Johnny and staff are of course saddened by the passing of Rush drummer Neil Peart but we'll have some Rush next week, right now it'd just get lost and his efforts deserve far more.
*Note the love and care Johnny went to for you the reader by taking the extra time to spell out Electric Light Orchestra in the headline and not just ELO.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with DAVE MATTHEWS BAND!

Johnny mentioned last week how the Peter Gabriel song, 'Big Time' always sounds better in the car. If that song sounds better, this song, 'Two Step' was created for driving down I-80 between Jersey City and Michigan. Johnny always made yearly driving mp3 CD's of which he'd make copies for his friends and more often than not this song made the cut.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with GREEN DAY!

All who wander are not lost, some of them are Green Day in this video. Awesome rocker here in 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams' taking us out tonight.

Late night open thread

Stick and stay with the Oscoda City Desk tomorrow for storm updates and the best darn Music Series anywhere.

Thursday, January 9, 2020

OK kids, here is the update on Saturday's storm

And if Johnny loses power he's gonna light the biggest fire the north has ever seen. Whatever wicked this way comes, comes around 5-6am on Saturday morning. While those of us north of Saginaw Bay won't get as much ice as those downstate, we should get a huge dumping of snow. BOTH Accuweather and Wunderground are pointing to a 10" snow for Oscoda and the surround. The worst of the storm should probably start hitting around 2pm as of press time.

With a 5 Dr. Smith rating being the end of the world and 4 Dr. Smiths used for truly crippling storms, Johnny is rating this one as a 3 Dr. Smith winter storm.

Wednesday, January 8, 2020

Late night open thread

Johnny will do some factoring with the Action Weather Team tonight and will apply his foolproof 1-5 Dr. Smiths storm rating for Saturday sometime tomorrow. Fuck television weather and "experts." Johnny has created the future of storm predictin' and it's measured in Dr. Smiths.

Time for Oscoda, After Dark

We have good news and bad news: It all depends on how you feel about snow

Checking the Saturday weather situation on and off has indeed led to seeing a trend and that trend is MORE SNOW. Yesterday it was in the 6 inch range, now the Wunderground projection is north of 8 inches. Not trying to alarm anyone, just letting them know a trip to Roger's might be in order on Friday if you do your marketing on Saturday.

Johnny and the crew have been tracking the numbers from Wunderground for a couple three days and the projected possible snow totals have gone from 4.2 to now 6.2".

Keep your eyes and ears out to this weather station for more updates.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with PETER GABRIEL!

Johnny LOVES hearing this song whilst out driving. He hearts it. Not sure why it has a much bigger impact behind the wheel but hey, it just does. 'Big Time' kicking things off tonight and giving the 2020 Music Series a proper start.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with JEFFERSON AIRPLANE!

Johnny's a PR guy but he has other PR guys on the payroll listening to the Oscoda City Desk fandom, he does. They told him at the big holiday bash that Johnny should do more to be inclusive and inviting of the Hippie crowd and not make fun of them at every chance.

Fine, Johnny can listen. This song here, it's Hippie gold. And inclusive. And check out that Hippie graphic. Also, Johnny thinks Nixon is a bum and we should get out of Vietnam too.

Jefferson Airplane with 'Somebody to Love'

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with ENGLISH BEAT!

Heading out the door into this good Friday night, here's a great song to have stuck swimming around your head.

You're welcome.
