Taking us out for 2021, the traditional last song

Oh we only post the live version of 'Gimme Shelter' once a year and kids that time is now! See ya in 2022!

Getting closer to the magic hour!

Let's fill that time with some Pet Shop Boys and 'West End Girls' shall we?

Who's doing some Steppin' Out tonight?

Take it away, Joe

Know who always sounds good? Alison Moyet...

Here with a live version of the Yazoo hit, 'Don't Go'

Tonight IS the night...

Take it away Rod!

A newish song and already and old favorite...

Lord Huron with 'The World Ender'

Today is after all, all about 'After Dark'

Because it doesn't turn midnight in the daytime on December 31st or any other day not in the Arctic Circle. Let's toss out this smoky wonderful tune from Tito and Tarantula, 'After Dark'

If this song sounds familiar it's in the movie 'From Dusk Til' Dawn' and yes, this is the number Salma Hayek immortalizes and perfects the snake dance.

If it's New Year's Eve (and it is) it's an all-day music fest 'round these here parts!

Starting off the annual musical tradition in 2021 is Blur with 'Song 2'

Late night open thread

It's now past midnight which means Johnny's alma mater is playing a bowl game. Eastern Michigan will be playing Liberty in the Lending Tree Bowl at 5:45. Johnny cannot begin to tell you how many decades of watching simply vapid football in dear Ypsi how refreshing it is to you know, play in actual bowl games.

Let's go EMU (Hurons)!

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with COWBOY JUNKIES!

Welcome now to the last Music Series of 2021. Next week Johnny will be visiting and won't be here on Christmas Eve for a Music Series. New Year's Eve around these parts of course is an all day music celebration so way more than three songs that day.

Starting off tonight is one of the most underrated voices in all of rock and roll or popular music. Ladies and Jellyspoons it's Margo Timmins sounding great on 'Crescent Moon'.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with JOHN MELLENCAMP!

If you held Johnny's feet to the fire and asked him his favorite John Mellencamp song you'd probably get 'Minutes to Memories' as a reply. In fact you could say Johnny has made a line from this song his personal mantra:

"I do things my way and I pay a high price"

If you're willing to pay that price, you can do it your way. Johnny is sure that's not the true meaning here but Johnny sometimes sees things differently.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with MARK KNOPFLER!

Mr. Dire Straits has done some phenomenal music since Dire Straits left the scene. Mrs. Johnny and Johnny caught Mr. Knopfler one night in Detroit touring behind this album, Sailing to Philadelphia. Taking us out tonight here's 'Who's Your Baby Now' from that same album.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with THE BABYS!

Newsflash, Johnny loves Jon Waite and The Babys. Always has and always will. Their use of backup singers was almost peerless. Let's get this party started tonight with 'Isn't It Time'

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with JERRY HARRISON!

Johnny was actually considering this number by Talking Heads alum Jerry Harrison for our big New Year's Eve all-day Music Series but Johnny heard it in the car today and the die was cast. 'Rev It Up' getting you out of your chair tonight.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with FLEETWOOD MAC!

Oh this song. It's on like every playlist Johnny has for driving or a home event. This is the song Stevie Nicks was born to sing. Johnny just loves loves loves it. 'Sara' taking us out tonight all dreamlike.

Late night open thread

At this hour it sounds like from police scanner reports the parents of the Oxford High School shooter who took it on the lam earlier today have been spotted in the Mount Elliot and Lafayette area of Detroit. Their vehicle was supposedly found at 1111 Bellevue. Bring 'em in!

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with SMOKEY ROBINSON & THE MIRACLES!

Released in December of 1965, and 56 years later and, 'Going to a Go-Go' still fresh and hot as the day it was released. FYI, Smokey is a great follow on Twitter,

Motown for the win once again.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE!

Not many rock and roll songs make Johnny happy like this rocker. Fabulous, this one. The whole album is tip top and this could have been 3 or 4 different tracks but tonight it's 'Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black).

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with k.d.lang!

Sure we capitalize the band names in the headline on the Music Series but k.d. lang never has and darn it Johnny has enough respect for her and her music to go with that. Before her passing Mrs. Johnny had bought Johnny birthday tickets to see k.d. lang in NYC. She passed between buying them and the concert and Johnny just couldn't imagine going solo. He gave the tickets to two wonderful neighbors and they said the show was magnificent.

Of course it was, it's k.d. lang, here with 'Anywhere But Here' taking us out tonight.
