Late night open thread

Science night. You know, since you kids are out of school it's important to learn things away from the beaches and dispensaries.

Time for Oscoda, After Dark

Oscoda's July 4th fireworks show is ON!

Oscoda Township has approved a July 4th fireworks show down to da beach with proper social distancing being required (Which shouldn't be all that hard for a fireworks show). Since other lesser communities around here, Tawaseses, Harrisville and elsewhere were going ahead with plans for their crappy fireworks shows, Oscoda decided to show 'em how it's done.

Be there, aloha!

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with ARETHA FRANKLIN!

Awwww, Don Trump doesn't like Detroit and doesn't think it's worth much.

Johnny Action Space Punk vehemently disagrees and since this is his blog, it's his opinion that makes bank. It's Aretha from that fabulous city that has done more for America than almost any city and, 'I Say A Little Prayer'

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with MAZZY STAR!

One heaping helping of passionate indifference coming up! Served hot-n-tasty.

Mazzy Star and the wonderful, 'Fade Into You'

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with ELVIS COSTELLO & THE ATTRACTIONS!

Johnny doesn't remember much about the first real party he went to but he does remember this song and in fact the entire Armed Forces album being played. Johnny drank beer after beer in those red cups of lore. Smoked some of the marijuana that made it's way past Joe Parker. Went home and yacked and yacked. Good times.

In this price range...

Johnny is pissed he forgot this last year. Back to it being a yearly tradition.
TWO Meatballs references this month. Whew, Johnny better slow down.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS!

First off, for whatever reason the actual name of this great track had slipped completely by Johnny, a rarity in a world of rarities. He's simply thought it was 'A Woman in Love' but no, there's more in parenthesis and our official post will carry the official 'A Woman in Love (It's Not Me)'

How this got by Johnny all these years has him back digging into old mp3 ID tags for other mistakes. You can just enjoy the song while Johnny busies himself.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with FRED WESLEY & THE J.B.'S!

Did someone say funk? Johnny heard you. It's Fred Wesley & the J.B.'s, James Brown's backing band of renown laying it down on the fabulous, 'Doing It To Death' keeping the party going tonight.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with RUTH BROWN!

One of Johnny's favorite singers is Ruth Brown. He's got scads of her songs in his iTunes catalog. Wonderfully emotive. This one has always been a Johnny favorite, 'This Little Girl's Gone Rockin'' will no doubt put the swivel in your hips on the way out tonight.

It would only take one hour to drive to space. If you got into your car, turned on the ignition and drove up to the sky at 60 mph, it would take just one hour to get to outer space, according to astronomer Fred Hoyle.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with CRACKER!

Making a long overdue debut on the Music Series, it's Cracker from their Kerosene Hat album from 1993 with the hit, 'Get Off This' which Johnny thinks is a fine way to start the show tonight.

While a fan of Cracker, Johnny has never worn a Kerosene Hat. He has however worn a butt hat at the Windsor Ballet. Michiganders will all get that.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with JOE WALSH!

Johnny remembers reading a piece on how cold the old Candlestick Park in San Francisco used to get in the evenings even in the summer. The fog would roll in and it got c-c-c-cold by all accounts. In fact, the Giants used to give pins out to fans who stayed the full length of an extra-inning game as a memento to their toughness.

A music writer was reviewing an Eagles concert at Candlestick and to that chilly-end, Johnny remembers him writing, "The last things you want to hear at 11:45pm at Candlestick Park is, Ladies and gentlemen, Joe Walsh!"

It's pretty chilly in Oscoda tonight sooooo, ladies and gentlemen, Joe Walsh, and 'Life's Been Good'

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with THEM!

Yes, Van Morrison DOES sing this song but it's with the band Them, not solo. Johnny has a feeling some people are seeing him listing Them as an artist tonight on Twitter and some giving a shoulder shrug. That's fine, more music for us!

Them and the anthemic, 'Gloria'

Gossip, Gossip, We Want Gossip! Gossip, Gossip, We Want Gossip!

Johnny just happened to be standing in the right place at the right time yesterday to hear a stan (Over the top fan) for the Hilltop Bar and Grill saying, are you sitting down, Desi's Taco Lounge 'cheated' to win last year's Best Burger award over the Hilltop. All kinds of wild accusations about possible vote irregularities, and complaining Desi's entry wasn't really a burger but an appetizer.

Woooo, good stuff on a Monday eh Oscoda?

Now, while Johnny has had other things at Hilltop he hasn't had the burger. Johnny has had a regular Desi's cheeseburger, not the award-winning one, and he right enjoyed it. Reminded him of the cheeseburger at the Ann Arbor landmark, The Fleetwood Diner. Good stuff. The taste tests will come soon enough but for now, Hilltop and Desi's, Fight! Fight! Fight!

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with THE BABYS!

A truly under-appreciated band even in their heyday. Johnny is a big fan of John Waite's voice and the way this band used backup singers. On a few tracks the backups are just dazzling, especially on the Head First album (shown here).

'Every Time I Think of You' getting us started tonight.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with SMOKEY ROBINSON & THE MIRACLES!

'I Second That Emotion'

Push play

Enjoy

No, you can't sing like Smokey

Stop it

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with CARLY SIMON!

Yes, yes, we're all heard the speculation about this song and whether Carly Simon was singing about Mick Jagger (who sings backup on this song) or Warren Beatty. While Carly Simon clarified the second verse was about Beatty a few years back, the rest of the song, in Johnny's estimation is about Allan Melvin, TV's Sam the Butcher on the Brady Bunch.

Ha-ha, now you have to live with that image for-ev-er.

'You're So Vain' taking us out into this good night
